Venezuela's Angel Falls has been named the world's largest uninterrupted waterfall by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Spanish it is called ‘Salto Angel’ and in Pimon it is called ‘Kerepakupai’. Which means ‘deepest waterfall’.
The waterfall is 989 m (3212 ft) high and 607 m (2648 ft) deep.
The water of this waterfall is flowing near Mount Aoyantepui in the Kanaima National Park in Venezuela. The waterfall originates from the Orinoco River (also known as the Kerep or Kerepakupai River) and flows into the Churun River.
The history of the discovery of Angel Falls is quite interesting. In the mid-twentieth century, Jimmy Angel, an American pilot, traveled to Venezuela in search of gold mines. Routine Mafic was flying around the Aoyantepui area of Venezuela. He suddenly saw a huge waterfall. Jimmy Angel wanted his plane to land on the hill above the waterfall. Just then the danger in the barrier. Being a muddy place, the wheels of the aircraft suffered special damage. As a result, they were no longer able to fly the plane from there. The three companions, including Angel and his wife Marie, were then forced to leave on foot.
It takes them about 11 days to cross the remote jungle and reach the locality. Word of Jimmy Angel's adventure spread. And the name of the waterfall is Angel Falls.
To the locals, this waterfall is known as Kerepakupai. Former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wanted to change the name of the waterfall. He later called on every Venezuelan citizen to call the waterfall Kerepakupai, although he did not mandate a name change.
Angel Falls is a major tourist attraction in Venezuela. However, it is difficult for many to get here as it is located in a remote place. You must first arrive at Kanaima Camp from Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolivar Airport. From there you have to go by the river to the waterfall. From June to December the river has enough water for boating. This is the best time to visit this waterfall. There is no water in the river from December to June.
Several Hollywood movies have been filmed in this waterfall. The waterfall features Disney's animated film 'Dinosaur' with 'Up' and the latest film 'Point Break' released in 2015.
