The US automaker plans to make cars completely carbon-free. By 2035, GM will only manufacture cars that emit carbon emissions. General Motors has always wanted to build zero-carbon cars, but no targets have been set. The new cars will be equipped with electric batteries or any carbon-free technology.
It was announced before the pandemic that the entire plan would cost 2 billion dollars. That cost is now 2.8 billion dollars. General Motors has links with many organizations working to protect the environment. General Motors announced after new US President Joe Biden signed a number of executive orders to combat climate change.
GM authorities say that by 2030, factories operating in the United States will be covered with renewable energy. It will take another 5 years for this activity to spread around the world. GM also signed an agreement with 300 companies aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
GM will have to reduce carbon emissions by 75 percent of cars initially sold. Earlier, the company had planned to run 40 percent of GM vehicles in the United States with batteries by 2025.
At present in the United States, GM emits zero carbon, just the Chevrolet Bolt. 2,854 cars were sold last year.
Volkswagen, the world's second-largest carmaker, sold 231,600 electric cars last year. This represents two and a half percent of the total car sales in the world.
Meanwhile, GM invested 2.2 billion dollars in the Detroit plant, 2 billion dollars in Spring Hill and 3 million yen in Michigan. This investment is only for making electric cars.
